Give Me Snow
Risa looked like she was enamoured by the white stuff falling. Oh it didn't last as it warmed up but surely beat having so much mud tracked in. Nathan combed out some dogs. I combed out others. Dennis got up earlier than the day before. It means he will nap tonight after dinner till we go to bed.
The sun is shining. Here are some photos taken today - no edits - it is what it is.
Dogs are having fun but at the moment they are napping with Nathan. Think I am terminally tired but this soon shall pass till Spice. I sat with the dogs and had a ton of snuggles. It felt ever so good. Dennis is going to do a run through the house as its too slippery to do it outside and the dogs have a blast when he indulges them like that.
Usually I make a corned beef, cabbage, carrots and potatoes but have to buy it first. Thats okay as it goes on sale after today. I am not Irish but I try to celebrate holidays of friends. It gives us a taste of their traditions.

It is very slippery here too, the snow is very hard and uneven and it is difficult even for Cooper to walk on it. I can tell that he is careful when he's outside.
I'm making a Dublin Coddle for Russell who is part Irish.part Scottish.... I'm not a big fan of Irish food but it's fun to celebrate just the same. Enjoy your corned beef tomorrow!
Great photos!
Not sure I will be doing it tomorrow. Have to have it today as it cooks overnight. Think it will be a next week thing. I like stews and I like trying different food. I do not eat ham so I couldn't ever have a coddle. :-) Hope Russell enjoys. Its fun to celebrate. I need a litter celebration. hehehe Maybe after Spice I will indulge. For now I am terminally tired.
The dogs are walking careful and I appreciate that they do. Sounds like your weather is similar. Half our yard now is ground but not enough to allow the run like crazy. Soon - hoping...
Just tuned in to see the new puppies! Will post on there, but how lovely!
Happy St. Paddy's Day to everyone! I'm doing Corned Beef and Cabbage for the 1st time - have always done the Irish Stew and decided to change this year. We are both 1/2 Irish/1/2 Scottish so hugs to Russell! :-)
Our yard is all patio, interlock and pea stone around gigantic patio stones. We had a swamp last year and so re-landscaped. No more dirty feet. We love it and most importantly so does Laci. Luv the pea stone - urine sinks and feces easily spotted and cleaned up. It's been a wonderful change!
Debi: Enjoy your meal. Yum!!
We do not have a problem with flooding but when the snow melts on the grass it gets muddy. It also gets muddy when they run through the garden. They can't help themselves. Glad Laci is enjoying dry feet. If I had it to do all over I would do a stone patio covered and no gardens except in big huge pots. Rather bland but would save us in laundry.
Thx Darlah! We did enjoy. A keeper.
I know the stones sound like "concrete city" but it's quite an oasis and we love it. And, it's so good for Laci . . . and us! :-) We plan to down size soon and I want just what you said . . a patio and planters and of course since no pool, have to have a pond. How are the Havanese w/ fish? Perhaps the pond should be vegetation only!???
Loved all the pictures. Was that Ella rolling around in what was left of the snow ?
We have patio interlock, pea gravel around large flagstone pieces for the dogs, and have terraced planters that are the width of the yard. This is where the mud is and Patches loves them. You can't win! Lol
I have a feeling with some where there is mud there is a way. :-)
Debi: Not sure I can do without a pool. I am not sure some of the dogs could do without it either. But for me its our holiday - our escape. Are you thinking of moving to Florida?
Debi, when we lived in Mississauga, our backyard was like yours....with a fish pond, beautiful Kois....and vegetation . Cooper didn't mind the fish and didn't mind the pond. We had no grass to cut, just patio, stones, and some flower beds. Great for dogs. We will downsize soon too (in a few years at the most) and will be looking for the same as what we had.
Angela - not sure where your issue is w/ mud as we have none. It's impossible w/ the way our landscape has been done as there is no soil to turn in to mud. It's prepped for many layers before the stones so water sinks deep and we have no puddles or water at all.
Darlah - we aren't planning on moving to Florida. We were looking to purchase a house there, but have decided to rent until when and "if" we decide to stay longer than 3 or 4 months. For now, that is not in the plans. We do however, need to downsize and should have done so a long time ago. We love our pool and as soon as our grandkids no longer have an interest, we will move and my thought is waterfall pond so we still have water. We've also thought of a cottage, but . . . we shall see! Still in the planning mode . . . not easy!
Anne - Seems we live and learn. Glad your landscape worked out well also. Our yard is ideal as far as maintenance and Laci. We just need to downsize so will take our experience w/ us and look for something smaller and more manageable for the years ahead.
Hope you had a nice holiday! Happy St. Paddy's!!! :-)
Debi, our planters are made with stone in the ground. They have soil and plants. My backyard is a hill with lots of flat space at the bottom. The patio is at the top, then 2 levels of planters, then the whole flat bottom area is pea gravel and flagstone. The mud is in the planters only. And this is where she likes to play.
Debi: At 14 and 13 our grandkids love the pool still. :-)
Anne but you just moved there. I have a friend moving out to the country about a half hour outside of Orangeville so 90 minutes away. She's going to live off the land. She will have 200 apple trees. I can't even get my garden done but this year I may have a party and get people to dig up what they want that I have too much of.
I used to have an exquisite garden, I want it back. :-)
As Debi said, we live and learn. Where we are is great for now but not for the long term....too much land, too big a house, harsh winters....
I have a friend that just sold her place in Thornhill. They bought a place in Flesherton (spelling?) -a 45 year old place. He is not Mr. Fix It. They have a grove of apple trees. This house didn't sell for 2 years. She realizes due to the difference in cost, what she will have to put into it they will never be able to move back to the city. They have this idea they will live off the land. I have been friends with her since our kids were little and went to school together. She will be near ski resorts and hope people will come stay with her then. The idea that you must make it work as there is no going back is scary to me. We all told her and I hate to see her miserable with the amount of work. The $$ she got as her place sold high will go into this place, gas into the city etc
Anne, your place has awards. You will be able to sell yours easily. In this case - not so. Oh well - not my life but still you worry about your friends. Even Yvonne finds her place isolating.
Darlah, when you have that party, please invite me. I would love to have some of what you have too much of. I just love your garden!
Do you find that the dogs eat the plants? I am thinking I should move some of my plants that may be not so dog conducive to the front yard in case Patches eats some of them. I have not had this issue before but Patches eats twigs and dead leaves. Do you think she might eat live plants when they start sprouting?
Darlah if you plan a 'garden party'. You should ask each guest to bring a bag of garden soil in exchange for some of your perennial plants. That way you can
refresh the areas where plant material has been removed. Everybody wins.
