Dusting of Snow

Mom and Daughter PlayTriuffie and BarneyWe had a very full day. Here is a gallery. Barney, Odin and Benji are visiting. Benji just came for play and grooming and he will be departing in less than an hour. Murphy departed earlier. We look forward to visits from the pups.

Barney is so smitten with Truffie, it's unreal.

I cleaned the house, I groomed. I did the blogs, I cleaned.

Nathan went outside today and found his LLBean waterproof shoes that he adores sprung a leak. It's not that they are old (actually not old at all) but Inula seemed to take a liking to them. Tsk tsk. Remember a pair of sandles I treasured that was chewed? Nathan told me if you put them away it wouldn't happen. I didn't say a word to him. I just shook my head. Guess what he is getting for the holidays. hahaha Inula will get a massive chew toy. Not as a reward but it is obvious she needs to chew on something and best a toy vs. shoes.

That was our day. How was yours?

My day? Well one ofmy front teeth snapped in half (not exaggerating), luckily emergency dentist was able to glue it back on (yes, really). After That I came home to tons of lovin from Clarity and Farley, your gallery just made me smile, and your story made me chuckle ... and my tooth? Well I get to become a queen in 3 weeks when I get a crown!

Looks like Saffi had a wild play day. She really looks like her mother.

Christine:

I had that happen to my front tooth on a Saturday night. That is NOT fun. Glad you have the duo to give you comfort and glad the gallery made you smile!

Looks like lots of fun today. We had a lazy day for a change. Sam recuperating from getting his pacemaker replaced. Rusty sprawled on the bed keeping us company. Christine you are brave. Glad your duo was there for you. Also laughed at your story Darlah.

Do you have to cut Havanese hair or can you leave it long like the show dogs?

Wonderful gallery and I love the picture of Truffie and Barney. So cute together! Our day was uneventful, went for a nice walk with the Coop. He has to wear his Muttluks now. We have no snow but there is a lot of salt on the sidewalks from the snow we had last week. Not good for the paws.

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAnne and Cooper

Same here with salt. We just wash pads when they return. You have done well getting him used to them.

December 11, 2016 | Registered CommenterDarlah

You can leave hair long. All you need to do is comb it. Many do leave it long. Most short.

December 11, 2016 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Is Sam okay?

December 11, 2016 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Safi, Thyme and Murphy seem to be tight!

December 11, 2016 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Yes, we are already dealing with the salt on the sidewalks here as well and Farley hasn't tried boots yet. (No pain with the tooth, it had a root canal years ago).

December 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterChristine, Clarity & Farley

I compromise with hair. Clarity is easy to comb and doesn't mat easily so it is relatively long ... Farley, well, we have to see. It's starting to mat, perhaps this is the blowing coat stage I've heard about. Hopefully adult hair is also silky and he can stay longer as well.

Patches is short haired and it is perfect to maintain this way since her coat is very thick. I started growing Radar's hair out since he is past the blow coat stage but, even though I brush and comb daily, he gets quite matted on our walks from his harness. He is a bit of a wuss (shhhhh, he doesn't know) and hates me taking the matts out when we get home. So, it is a toss up if I will let him grow longer or keep it short. They are both gorgeous to me either way. Really, it is what is most comfortable for them that counts.

Thank you for your answers. I love Havanese long hair and some of the shorter cuts but not all. When I get my Havanese I want long hair and will enjoy combing it.

Time to get a new harness if it is creating knots that fast. Perhaps a fabric underneath it would be what you need. You can keep him short. It's what each likes that is important but he should not be matting after each walk due to a harness. The culprit is either the harness, the shampoo/conditioner/grooming spray or the combo or part combo that is an issue. I say this as it should be explored so you don't get frustrated. For instance I use a different shampoo/conditioner for Roxie vs Jeannie. They have different types of hair. Roxie I could forget brushing her for a week and did when I was really sick and she had no knots. But if I use heavy conditioner on her she becomes greasy (not bad mind you) but she will knot easily. I instead use a rinse vs a conditioner. For instance early on I used a heavier conditioner on a dog and although it looked glossy after it wasn't the right for him. He has oily hair and needs a rinse otherwise it will create tangles easily.

Just food for thought.

December 11, 2016 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Oh my gosh, thanks Darlah, that never occurred to me. I shampoo and then use a conditioner on them both. I use quite a bit of conditioner too in an attempt to discourage the matts. His harness is a bit big which might add to the issue. I got a wider harness for safety but it is a touch big since he hasn't finished growing yet. He gets tangles underneath but he also has a great time on his leash pulling here, there and everywhere. We don't yet go for 'just' walks, they play like heck while they are walking. Thanks for the tips.

Lighter conditioner should help - a rinse even better. Give it a try.

December 11, 2016 | Registered CommenterDarlah

The best harness I have is a kurgo. I use it in the car and walking it doesn't contribute to the mats which are just on the legs after getting wet or full of leaves and cut grass. I do sometimes use a collar but it does roll round the neck and can cause mats in the undercoat, so does a coat but Pup does need it at times.

Is there a special rinse for Havanese? Or can I dilute conditioner?

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSu

Natures Specialties has a rinse. Biogroom has a few. Just do a search on cream rinse.

Darlah: Thank you
