Really Stormy

Daisy is looking at Stormy as if to say - really?

I have a video of Stormy eating. It's rather noisy. You see Risa barks for her supper and then soon others chime in but this will give you a comparison between Stormy, Thyme and Raven.

It's mighty cold out today. Dogs are having fun. We are trying to get to bed at 9pm. But we have a pickup it seems at 9. So, maybe I will go to bed and Nathan can wait. hahahahaha

Tia dropped in over night. Holly joined us. We have a truly fun crew.

It's spring forward time tonight. Will the dogs survive? Will the humans survive? We will let you know tomorrow.

Till then, enjoy the gallery.

Wow, I thought Murphy ate quickly but Stormy is hoovering her food.

Wow, Stormy sure eats fast while Raven is just savouring. What a difference between the two! Thanks for sharing, really fun to watch.

Both Clarity and Farley eat with slow bowls. Without them, Farley downs 1/3 cup in 25 seconds and Clarity 1/4 cup in 33 seconds.

Christine, I never thought about actually timing them while they eat. All I know is that the food vanishes in a hurry.

They didn't always eat like this. When Farley came, Clarity figured she could eat hers AND get some of his if she ate fast enough. Farley started to catch on so he started eating faster. It went back and forth until it became ridiculous, I saw people talking about the slow bowls so I videoed them and sent the times to Darlah and Nathan who confirmed they needed slow bowls. I've used them ever since.

Raven can be Ines' sister at meal time. Ines eats also in slow motion. She likes to look around, more grilled chicken breast, please. Stormy instead, eats like a ... storm. She and Thyme are so cute checking each other bowls.

What an interesting video! It's funny how Thyme is checking out if there's more food in Stormy bowl. Good idea to have Raven on a higher platform so that thyme and stormy are not raiding her food.
Tenshi used to eat like Raven. Initially, I have to lure her to her bowl then put some kibble out on the ground so she will gain interest to eat her meal. Now, we put the food down and she just eats and most of the time she eats everything.

Sylvia: Progress!!

All of ours from puppies to seniors get 1/4 cup each meal. It doesn't matter how active they are, I have never had too skinny with the exception of Saffron When they are wee pups you fed 3 times a day.

Remember training treats count too.

Saffron is no longer too thin but she also eats each meal. Previously she would skip here and there. She no longer does with a sprinkling of treats (I crush them to powder) added to her meal and I mean a sliver of treats. I did the same with Raven and that is how I got her eating from her bowl. We already add chicken in the morning finely ground and mixed in and we cook ground meat and finely grind that up and add a couple of pinches to the food.

If I am training, I add a bit less than the 1/4c. If your dog is getting where he is starting to get round you need to cut back on the food. The damage to the legs, joints etc can lead to costly operations. I know someone that had both his legs done due to acl injuries and he was carrying too much weight and was told but guess what he is carrying too much weight again and it will happen again.

I need to lose weight so I know it is hard but I know when I carry too much weight I have digestion issues, I huff and puff running upstairs and this happens to your dogs. You are taxing their system. We directly control what they eat and how much exercise they get. It's like having a personal trainer. It is a gift we give to our dogs to keep them healthy as much as we can. Now if I could just find the time and energy and control to do it for myself.

Oh Darlah that video!! I would think that Stormy and Marco eating would be a 'photo finish' .... I just love little Raven... eating and savouring. While watching the video with sound... Marco came to a halt mid play and was extremely interested in the sounds from the video!! LOL, he says HI! or maybe he just heard FOOD LOL. Let me know if you get the slow bowl.. I put some of his designated daily kibble in his treat ball and that keeps him amused for a bit... he's getting too good at whipping that ball around so the treats fall out.

Very true, Darlah. Too many health risks & problems with overweight. When I reduced Farley to 1/4 cup 2 times a day, it was too little and my vet cautioned me he was getting too skinny. HOWEVER, more than 1/4 for Clarity is too much, you can feel the fat layer over her ribs & see the difference in her walk & energy. Farley may have an unusually fast metabolism so he gets more, but I monitor him VERY CLOSELY. A lovely old couple on my street loved their dog to death with food. Although they walked him every day, he was obese. He had diabetes by 5, blind by 6 and died 6 months later. I watched this happen and tried to educate them, but to no avail. They blamed the vet and just couldn't believe the extra weight had caused all the dog's problems. At one point they worked on getting the weight down, but too much damage had already taken place. It's very sad.
Understanding there are no guarantees in life, I so appreciate the lengths you and Nathan go to to provide us with the healthiest puppies possible and then to educate us so that we may have them in our lives for as long as possible. Thank you for this!

Darlah - Thanks for the tips on what you add to the dog's food. I find Abby is a picky eater and sometimes will only eat once a day. However, she is 10 lbs. and the vet is happy with that!
