Suprises are Fun!

Well, we didn't do anything for our anniversary. We had a visiting puppy - Daisy come and one puppy go home so other than that we watched TV and played with the dawgs.

But Nathan had a surprise for me today - Kit Kat is over visiting for the night - maybe till Sunday and we are enjoying her company and so is Fiona. He also brought home Japanese - yum!

Our visiting puppy, Daisy slept on the bed with me last night and although she wouldn't settle down at first, a growling voice - firm but not nasty got her tucked up against me. All I had to do is move and oh boy I move while I sleep and she kept thinking it was an invitation to play.

We are hoping tonight she knows the drill but with KitKat visiting - who knows.

It's become very frigid outside and they say snow all week. This is when the gals will go into heat - you watch. :-)

Hope you enjoy today's photos.

Today's Fun

We had Jean and Patt over with Kooba, Quito, Jazmyn and Marlee. They came over to visit and pick up their Havanese calendars. We still have a few available.

Here's just a highlight of today. Plus tomorrow stay tuned for a visiting puppy and her antics.

Our Canine Good Neighbour Boy

What is a Canine Good Neighbour Award?

It's a certification program that test dogs that have the training and demeanor to be reliable family members as well as good-standing community members. The testing takes place in a busy public area, such as a shopping mall or a dog show. Kat took his test today and passed with flying colours.

He even managed to put smiles on many faces when he did his recall showing more enthusiasm than they have ever seen.

Everyone else had their down/stay on a very long lead but Kat did his with his lead dropped and Nathan just walking away. He stayed no matter what he did.

Kat has not been in obedience for a long time and we must admit we haven't been doing our reinforcements. We have been doing so many other things with the dogs but it all came back.

What do you have to do to pass? 12 out of 12 and it was a breeze for this guy. Anyone can take the test and get their award. All you have to do is practice or do obedience, forget about it and then take the test without. hahaha

Testing includes the following:

Accepting a friendly stranger โ€” The owner of the dog shakes hands with a friendly stranger.

Patiently sitting for petting โ€” A test for shyness and resentment.

Appearance & grooming โ€” The owner's care and sense of responsibility is seen in how his dog is kept.

Out for a walk โ€” Illustrating handler's control of the dog. Kat heeled perfectly.

Walking through a crowd โ€” Demonstrating how the dog moves in a crowd without unduly distress and under his owner's control.

Commands โ€” Sit, Down, Stay. Illustrating that the dog has been trained and responds well.

Come when called (long line) Nathan used nothing.

Praise/interactions โ€” Illustrating the relationship between dog and owner.

Reaction to passing dogs โ€” Demonstrates if the dog behaves politely around other dogs.

Distractions โ€” Demonstrates the dog's confidence when faced with common distractions.

Supervised isolation โ€” Demonstrates whether the dog can be left with someone other than his usual handler and still maintain training and good manners. Nathan left Kat with a stranger, put Kat in stay, and left for 5 minutes.

Walking through a door or gate and making sure the dog doesn't bolt.

*Any dog that jumps up on a person, lunges at another dog or displays unruly behaviour is disqualified.

Upon successful completion of the test, the owner is awarded a certificate signifying that he or she is a responsible dog owner who has taken the time and effort to provide their dog with basic good manners and that, on the day of testing, the dog demonstrated that it is a socially acceptable dog.

Dogs that have solid obedience training are a pleasure to live with, adapt well to a human living environment, exhibit good manners in the presence of people and other dogs and are content in the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation and an enriched quality of life.

Here's the benefits:

Dog owners learn how well their canine companions behave under normal on-the-street conditions around other people and dogs.

Dog owners can proudly display the Certificate with the Responsible Dog Owners of Canada seal that signifies that on the day of testing the dog demonstrated good basic manners and behaviour.

Dog owners will appreciate that their well-behaved dogs are more readily accepted wherever they go because of their good manners.

Dogs will be much happier because they will be able to spend more time with their humans in many more places.

You should go for it. If interested, let us know and we will tell you where testing is available near you.

Ours was hosted by the Rottie club so we saw mostly Rotties taking the test but even though we were the only small dog waiting our turn, we got to see how Kat did around Rotties. We also saw how well he remembered his commands.

Fiona's Empty Nest

They start going home tomorrow.

What's a mother to do when the pups are leaving the nest?

We make sure they do not go all at once and that makes it easier.

Ah - but we will miss them!

When Do You Say Enough?

It's rather hard when one of our canine pals is dealing with illness or injuries. When do you say - it's time. It's different for everyone. That's okay but sometimes when you are in the thick of it, you can't see.

We would give our last meal to our dawgs. We adore them so. We fall hard for all our visitors too. It's just us.

Terra had a cruciate operation and has grade 4 hip dysplasia - not good. The vet said most would have put her down. I asked -will she be functioning again? Seeing she has 2 legs to do - he said there's a good chance but won't know till we see if she can strengthen her back end. She absolutely has atrophy from not using her leg. She must be walked around the block 3 times a day steady slow pace. It takes about 20 minutes each go around. Today she is in for her first rehabilitation on the underwater treadmill. I asked Nathan to take photos. I am hoping she does well.

Are we doing this for her or us? To be honest - both but if she had to live with constant pain, I would rethink this process. She will absolutely have arthritis. Perhaps be on Metacam all the rest of her life or maybe not.

She so much wants to be running like Treasure here and we can't blame her.

Before you read this as such a downer - it isn't. It's something we are all faced with eventually in humans and canines.

I do believe Terra is behind in her healing but she is also dealing with a hip and another bad leg - rather a tough one but if you saw her face when Nathan took just her to the car - well priceless.

Our big dawgs are a key element here - socializing the smaller sets to the big dawgs so they find that they are larger but just as friendly. That's important. Of course not all big dogs will be friendly but they must learn size is not a factor - it's about the dawg.

Gad, in our neighbourhood the dawgs must learn that even humans can be afraid of them. We try to get people over that but not always successful.

The puppies that will be 10 weeks tomorrow climb all over Terra and Whitney. They kiss them and snuggle with them. Plus the Goldens just truly know how to be a part of the Havanese pack.

We may never get a Golden after Whitney and Terra but we will always have some big dawg in our lives if we can. For us, the socialization element is critical and it is critical for people to expose their dawgs after they leave and have had their shots - to all sorts of things from dawgs to elevators to balloons etc.

Treasure the moments you have. Make the most of life and enjoy the laughter the Havanese bring - and they do - if you allow.

Always Changing

This photo begs the question, will Nathan be laying on the ground in the snow with pups? Time will tell.

The puppies start going on Friday. We will then be down to 3 till Monday when another goes and on Tuesday yet another. Then we have a boarder coming then the last one - the first born gone. Gad..no more puppies.

But come December we have boarders that will keep us busy and hopefully we will hear stories and get photos and hear all about their new adventures.

We feel like we are always in a flux of change around here but that's okay. Change is fun and good and different and it's life. :-)

Just got back from a walk with all the dogs - 2 at a time - Nathan does 2, I do 2 and so we go on multiple walks. We try to change the routes to make it interesting. Dogs and people get bored with the same old route day in and day out.

Clothing and Face Furnishings

Look at what these humans do to me.

Okay, I don't seem to mind - I just look downright funny but my face stays cleaner for the show. It's boy stuff putting my face in all sorts of places it shouldn't be...not neutered boys.

That's okay, winter is coming and Mommy will put these jackets on us when the snow is extra wet so we don't get ice balls. Yes, we get a very cold snowball tummy but if there is a jacket covering that tummy, well only the legs get it. It has to be certain type of snow and it can get washed off easily but for us its an assembly line dressing everyone.

Why are we talking about snow? It's coming - eventually... Best be prepared.

Long Day

It was a long day today and the Talemaker crew is so tired.

Kat took breed today at a show. He had to be washed yet again tonight as he goes to the show early tomorrow. I wanted to just wash his feet and call it a day but I didn't.

All dawgs got much play, groomed - loved and got to platy with a tibetan terrier and a bichon.

The humans want to sleep and it seems like the dawgs do too. I can't wait till it's time to snuggle and let the zzz's overtake us.

Sometimes there are days like this...

Marathon Bath - Or Not!

Took a photo of Abigail pouncing at Fiona and went - ooops look at her feet. She's been mucking it up with the little ones for sure. But I had Rocky to wash, Kat to wash and Shoshi.

Tomorrow it will be Risa, Abigail and maybe Whitney. We shall see.

We have a busy show weekend so the Kat is wrapped again. I took the silly wraps out when we had company. I think Nathan thinks Kat looks so silly but his face stays cleaner that way so in they go till Friday.

Shoshi's hair is starting to get long so it's getting at the stage of knotting. (she has a cottony coat) She's a pet and our only cotton coat thus far. It gets a certain length and you go - cut it or deal with the knots - which shall it be. I usually end up cutting it as she is a snowball collector in the winter. We shall see how long I last. Good thing about her hair is I can take the thinning shears to it and cut into any knots and brush them out - way easy and you would never know as her coat is thick. So, I may go that route. We shall see.

Rocky, who went home today wasn't crazy about the Bathing Beauty. He was the first dog that was not happy with it sitting in the sink with him. I haven't figured out why yet but he calmed down and the washing part wasn't bad..just could tell he didn't want to be in the sink.

It's quiet around here without Rocky but I tell you, if Gidget has her way, it won't be. She was even going after Risa today. It was a riot.

If you click on the photo, you will see Gidget with her tongue hanging out.

Gidget is with us till Sunday and then we will be down to our own till December. Imagine that!

Puppy Available

This Puppy is SOLD
A friend of ours that lives in Sudbury has a puppy available. I know, not many like to drive so far but if interested, we can confiscate the cutie and you can see it up close and personal at our house.

Besides, it would give us an excuse to get another puppy to play around here.

Last time we did this for our friend, Lil' Man found a home with the most amazing couple of gals we ever got to know. So, win/win for us. We get another puppy to play with. You get to see her up close and personal and bonus, she's ready to go to that forever home now.

If interested, send Paula email. She'll answer all your questions. Let her know you heard about this cutie here.

Time Changes Everything

Hi, my name is Gidget, formally Paris. I am visiting at Talemaker Havanese. You can't tell by this photo but I am sitting on 3 pillows stacked on top of each other. I am a gal who adores comfort. I also love to snuggle at bedtime with that human female here who grooms me each day even if I think I don't need it.

I settle in immediately when I visit and so does my son Louis who also visits at times. He's visiting over the Xmas holiday.

I am the only dawg that gets away with jumping on Kat's back. He doesn't seem to mind a bit though he gives me the look - like what are you - crazy gal?

When I come, I tend to take the top pillows. I figure I am one of the leaders around here and hey I am also a party gal getting the rest to run, chase me and play like never before except maybe with Teddy who doesn't think he is boss but brings new meaning to party guy!

I am hanging out, playing, taking walks and having an adorable time putting Treasure into her place when she thinks she is all that. I am here till the 15th then my owner comes home and someone else will have to vy for the boss position.

Well, the winter holiday schedule is starting to get filled. If you are thinking of going away over the holidays, let these humans know as spots are filling up fast.

Long Day

Treasure was hanging out with the pups today playing. She really enjoys them and I can see why.

They are now 8 weeks so they are more able to keep up with the older crew.

We had a very full day. We had the crew outside playing.

We had to take Terra home from her cruciate operation.

Here is a photo of her stitches. We also had to get her a collar to stop her.  It's interesting getting her out to do her business and manuever her around but we are dealing - ice packs and all.

Tomorrow I wash Fiona - maybe tonight and start doing my regiment of washing dawgs one by one each day to get them all done.

Rocky comes this Friday till Monday and the crew will have fun playing with a new visitor. We can't wait.

Busy week - busy times but we seem to thrive in such. What about you?

Beds..

Kat won a bed for the puppies this weekend by winning breed in the toy specialty. They are his kids so that's the least he could. ROFL!!!

Treasure won one for Best Puppy at an earlier show. They must be destined to make sure the pups are always in comfort. Today's version is extra, extra soft.

If you don't want to enter a show to win a bed (not all of them give away beds to winners) some you get pretty ribbons, well you can get one from Woodruff that you can personalize. I don't get anything from suggesting a bed from them but one of the beds that we personalized with 'Precious Havanese' is found on this page with the name of Lola and the puppies LOVE it!

Now Kat goes back to having his faced and underbelly wrapped and gets oiled till the next show which thankfully is not for a bit.

We have Terra going in for a cruciate operation (ruptured ligament below the knee). She's our golden but just as loved as the Havanese. Our goldens allow us to socialize the puppies to big dogs in house and there is no better way at that age to slow condition them. She's such a gentle soul. She will have 6 to 8 weeks of healing and will be like new come the new year.

Just between you and me, I am hoping no snow till then but we don't always get what we want.

Tomorrow

They say I am going to get a bath tomorrow with a thing called a Bathing Beauty that the human here adores.

It's too pricey for pet people but if you do the shows - well you will wonder how you ever did without it. I saved long and hard for mine.

Kat was my first to try it and he loved it as it gave him a massage as he was getting washed.

The ways we indulge our dogs. Tomorrow we will fill you in on how Saki Fry does.

Quiet Around Here

Saki says, I hear my human Mommy is on a plane from far away - Hong Kong and she will be coming in very late tonight and my human Daddy will be in Saturday night.

Mommy will be on a different time zone and we 'get' that after our Bali trip. So, we said leave the cutie with us till human Daddy gets in. Have something to eat together then come get the cutie then she can be your total focus.

One good thing is she will be sleeping a lot too as they usually do though we are waiting to hear about Chewy as he may be the exception. He's a go, go type and his human siblings keep him going. Was looking at his little gal sibling and she's simply gorgeous and loves her Chew Chew as she so affectionately calls him.

Well, we have a show today. Nathan is a traitor and is showing Bichons for a friend. I hope he does really well. I will be at the show early afternoon. I was there last night for setup. I also picked up my Bathing Beauty and will be using it today on Kat and tomorrow on Saki and who else knows which dog.

One of our dearest friends had a puppy last night - a gorgeous tri-colour. We hear its a strong feeder and is doing rather well. It will be going to a new home in 10 weeks once it has one. We will be posting links when she updates her blog.

I got my camera back. So far it is clean - heh and seems to be working well but will be giving it a workout at the show. We will let you know. Wasn't happy with how long it took and I may be exploring places like Vistek vs. Henry's Camera for that 7D that I am coveting but we shall see.

Till later ...

Hanging Out at Talemaker

All of you know that my camera was in the shop - yep WAS. I got it back tonight but not in time for these shots where Chewie went home and his mom and sister - human style came to get him and Jasper also came to visit. We missed having Chico and Missy here. Saki is visiting till Saturday.

Here is a few of the photos from today. Crummy camera but click on them to see a larger view.

The gang was hanging out on the cover. Even the wee ones were out too. Jasper really enjoyed the younger set and his siblings. Saki and Chewie have been enjoying them all week long. It's an excellent way of socializing them with the bigger set.

If you look closely, you can see three of the siblings. Can you tell us who is who?

The crowd did get off the cover eventually and I did get a lot of lousy shots - some good ones that I haven't posted but hey, I tried with this camera.

I caught a lot of Jasper with various wee ones always hanging out under him. I think they rather enjoyed him.

Treasure was whispering sweet nothings in Jasper's ears. I wonder what she was saying.

Fiona, at first was worried about her babies but she calmed down and enjoyed the time too scatting and having a grand time.

Just when you thought we had all over cover photos, yeah the pups played elsewhere. Can you name them all?

We are going to miss Chewy. He kept trying to tell Saki he was boss but she knew she was. No Chewy to try to steal someone else's food. Hope he is sleeping well tonight.

Now we get to treasure Saki till Saturday and then we will be back to our own except for Gidget - who always adds fun around this place. Yep, when the gang was here, she was getting them to run-like-hell. She's such fun.

Hope you enjoyed the photos...more tomorrow...

Wet, Wild and Clean or....Dirty

Treasure had a bath last night. Yeah... I wasn't going to do it but she cleans up nicely. I also cleaned Wasabi today and Chewy gets a bath tomorrow.

Do I have my camera?

NO but we are thinking tomorrow.

Watch for steam rising if it doesn't come my way.

We have the siblings coming tomorrow and no camera. We will miss Missy - big time.

The crew was playing in the kitchen and then we gave in and took them out to play hard and get soaked in the rain - even the pups. Okay, I am a glutton for punishment but we adore the pups so what's a little more work?

Wasabi has been playing with Chewie and Saki every chance she gets. It's quite nice. You have to love her desire to be with them even after they go home.

Monday, our golden goes in for a cruciate operation and it will be a long process of healing and recovery. It's lots of $$ and lots of work to get her back to 100% they say. She will be staying overnight.

We will be seeing the vet a great deal next week - Terra on Monday and Tuesday and weeks end the pups for their shots. They also go for a hearing test. Busy next week.

Treasure has been playing with Saki quite a bit and good thing as Chewie is going home tomorrow. She will need someone more her size to play with when her brother goes home.

The rain and wet didn't seem to bother these two today. We will miss this interaction.

There is nothing like 2 puppies playing up a storm.

What a Day

We had the pure pleasure of a fun filled day with all the dawgs. Here you can see Fiona just loving two of her babies. Click on the photo to see a larger view.

Kooba and Quito will be heading home tomorrow. Baths for them in the morning.

They will be missed.

Kat had a bath today and had to have his beard covered and his belly hair covered.

Twice a day I have to take it off, and then redo it. He gets to sleep without. Too much but we have gals around and he gets his face dirty. It's an unneutered boy thing you know and he is doing conformation - otherwise - I wouldn't care enough to do such things.

The walks have been fun. Tonight Nathan had the siblings and I had Wasabi and Shoshi on one of the walks. He takes two - I take two and I am always behind him so the dawgs are forever wanting to get up in front so I have a lot of training on these walks. hahahahaha

Anyone who simply walks one or two dawgs can't fully appreciate what it takes to be the man behind.

Another breeder - who will go nameless asked me why I even bother to walk the dawgs daily seeing we have a backyard they can run in. But for us, we feel that a walk stimulates their mind. It gives you an opportunity to train. It allows your dawgs to deal with noises, people - other dawgs. If done right, it is an excellent way to slow condition your dawgs and bond. So - for us - it is important!

Yesterday we had 3 of the siblings over from Wasabi's last crew. It was delightful. One of the owners of Chico (Kaarina) took this stunning photo. She has a knack for wonderful portraits. Me, I do movement mostly but I truly admire someone who can capture a moment and she did.

We really wish we could have had 2 of the siblings here but it didn't work out this time getting the entire crew together. We will keep trying. On Thursday we will have Jasper, Saki and Chico here but unless we can talk Chewy into coming back after his parents pick him up - well there will have to be a next time.

It was great to see them and I am hoping the video works and the camera is working. I think I will buy a buy a new mini DVD for the occasion.

When dawgs come to visit, there is a bit of jockeying that goes on - trying to find their place in the pack. Kooba and Quito live together but she tried to get him to sleep on the bench instead of the bed. The first night it worked but then I told Kooba the rules and she straddled up on one side and Quito on the other. Gidget got my head and the siblings got Nathan. It's amazing how it all falls into place. Glad we have huge bed accommodations. It's a must around here!

Upset Time

So upsetting....we took video of Chico and none of it came out. :-(

I have had it with this video camera...it's (this video camera) got to go as soon as I can get another. :-(

Plus to add insult to injury, my camera is in the shop so do you think I got a good photo of Chico - NOT. :-( This one is the best we have.

Wasabi played with the pups amazingly. She really enjoyed Chico but do I have a video of it - no. We also had video of the Fiona pups with everyone.

This is so FRUSTRATING!

Well, I do have a video of Wasabi last night with Chewy and Saki and I am hoping Chico's owner sends us some stills of Chico while he was here...but till then, enjoy the Wasabi, Chewy and Saki video.
