Discuss It > Walking issues

When I take my 4 1/2 mth Havanese for her daily walk she eagerly waits for her leash to be put on and trots out the door. Then she firmly refuses to go, plants her feet firmly on the ground and winds up bobbing along sideways with me almost dragging her. However when I turn to go home she is raring to go. Can you give me some reason why this happens? She is somewhat frightened if she hears any other dogs barking in the area yet is not afraid to socialize with any dog.

It sounds like it is a fear issue and she 'wants' to go home but not out to where she doesn't know where she is going. But let me qualify that it is hard to decipher without seeing the dog. It 'sounds' like this may be the issue. If she is treat motivated try going 100 feet and rewarding and only rewarding with your very best treat during this time - no other time. Increase each time she achieves the goal till she is looking forward to the walk to and fro.

It is quite normal at first for a puppy to put on the brakes until they realize how much fun the walk is.

When my 4 year old was a puppy she became more reluctant to walk when everyone stopped to pet her, so we never got very far. Now when she gets outside she just stands, looking around for her fans. She is very stubborn and won't move and I really don't like to tug in case I hurt her neck and she won't go for treats either, its a fuss or nothing. Quite often I have to carry her passed all of the houses to the park and then she will shuffle along if no one is about but on a good day she will run around for her mini ball. She often stands and waits for cats, young children and her human friends and her doggy friends the Westies then after 10 minutes she gets fed up with them and moves on very slowly. But interestingly what I have noticed is that when a vehicle is approaching from behind us (usually a distance away) she will wait until she can see it and then will trot quite happily along the pavement, it's like she isn't sure if it's safe to move in case it's creeping up on us. I also find she gets very bored doing the same route or place so we have to be creative with our walks. I guess she is the loving none athletic kind.
