Memories & Coat Colour: Logan's Pup Photo Added
This is a memory (video) that I pulled up on Facebook. I point it out as the dogs do have fun on the pool cover but that dog sporting a short coat that looks almost grey and white is Logan. In short hair he looks like that but in longer hair you can see he is a beautiful sable. Short hair often gives an appearance of lighter and of course you cut off the tipping never to come back again. Logan now is sporting a long coat and you can see his sable is evident.
Sables do go lighter and darker throughout their lives. Brindles do too but have an irregular colour coat distribution. At times it is hard to distinguish between a sable and a brindle. Both can sport black masks that fade or get retained.
Roxie almost went a pure cream colour at one point and now she is back to being an apricot in appearance. If you look real close you see many shades in her coat. Adele is similar. Their mother was the same.
White coats will always remain white with the exception of ticking (black bleeding through). Dark coats can change. Blacks can have an appearance of grey or brown. You can get colours bleeding through and therefore you get to see coat changes.
I find the Havanese coat fascinating. Kat was a black and white as a puppy. He is now a silver and white. The photo above is Kat when I was maintaining him for the show ring. Now he is older. He plays and I am not so particular about him being perfectly groomed though he gets a bath every 2 weeks. Nathan always likes to show him off just before I bathe him or brush him or so it feels like.
Logan is not our breeding but he is related to our lines.
His father was Abigail's brother. It means both Roxie and Adele, Panda and Ella are related in various ways to him on one side. The other side was from a Cuban gal that our friend Yvonne owned called Lola.
This photo here is Logan as a pup. It appears he was a brown sable. He transformed into an apricot sable. He still has brown in his coat. It just means he has more apricot than brown so the apricot is more apparent.
Sables are a multitude of colours.

This is incredibly interesting. I can't believe Kat was black and white at birth, wow! I also find it hard to believe from the pic and video that Logan has sable in him. You are right, fascinating for sure.
Wow, incredible how coat colours can change. I never realized that Logan was greyish and white.
That is very interesting information Darlah. Rusty is Roxie and Kat's and he looks like Roxie and Ella I think. He is pretty white now with a top coat of apricot or sable, whatever you call it. His ears and tail tips have some black from his Dad. He really changed a lot from when he was a pup. Kat is so handsome... All Havanese have such beautiful faces.
Ronnie: When they are cut the change is more evident. As they grow out it comes back to a degree as you can see with Logan. Sables do that. They also lighten and darken throughout their lives. Keeping them short and continually cutting them you won't see the change as much. They will appear lighter that way. Just do.
I find Clarity's colouring very interesting. When she was very young, I just remember black and white. Now she has a lot of brown tones and silvering. I find the coat quite beautiful and have had a lot of people comment on it.
Kat - You are one hunka doggie! :)
I agree I see more colour in their coats when their hair is longer and very beautiful. However it is hard to maintain when it is long. Rusty does have lovely colouring. I could stay and cuddle with him all day, if only...Darlah you are my idol.
Ronnie:
Shouldn't feel bad about not being able to maintain him. Whatever is easier is best and colour is only colour.
Wonder if Clarity will silver out to a degree. Will have to look at her hair closely next time.
Ripley's colour has been a journey for sure. He was born with a dark full head and face mask which has almost disappeared and turned a creamy colour so that he looks a match for Cooper and recently his back is turning a brown that looks like a match for Adele's puppies. The groomer was completely shocked when I brought him in for a clip. He changed colour that much in a matter of weeks.
Thank you for writing this piece on coat colours. Never knew the colour change in a dog's coat can be so drastic until I discovered the Havanese and met you and Nathan! As for the colour change in Logan - it's hard to believe I'm looking at the same dog in these photos! I agree - it's truly a fascinating topic!
You have to pay attention to the roots. :-)
Ripley is a sable - a multitude of colours that can go dark and light throughout their lives. You notice it more with longer hair than shorter. That's not to say you should keep your dog in long coat cause really it can't be about colour. You live with the personality. :-)
So true Darlah ... Colour is just a way of identifying your dog in a crowd lol
One time having a fun discussion with my vet about Mabel's coat and the different coats and breeds out there at the end of it she pointed at Mabel's head and heart and said that is all that matters :)
It's true. The heart, the energy level and so much more is more important than colour. Truffie is a beautiful chocolate dog with mixed hues of reds. He is here as he is a Fiona dog so I needed to carry that line down and he is a gentle being. He will never fight even if he is competing over a girl in heat. He just looks at you and says PLEASE... A dog competing for position would never do with Kat who assumes he is top dog. Personality truly is important. Risa has always ruled the house but it seems lately she has passed that torch to Roxie.
I like the way you think Jayne and of course you too Darlah!
Truffie is truly a gentleman. He is always gentle. It looks to me like Kat likes to be
the king of the castle.
Kathy: Yeah - it's wishful thinking.
