Dirty Tales
Well, I did bathe everyone - seriously - groomed too but it rained and well dirt attaches like magnets especially with pups as they are so close to the ground. Not many photos today. Did capture Murphy too. You didn't expect her to stay clean now did you?
Did finish the whelping area and got my emergency kit packed and in the car. It gets unloaded after the vet visit so no updates today on the moms blogs but tomorrow you will see updates in both.
Blogs will be late as we do not expect to be back home till 6 or 7pm. We shall see how the traffic is.
Dogs have been having fun. It's just a little dirty out there. Oh well - best made plans...

What adorable mud pies!!
I love the picture of all the dogs lined up
OMG Saffron and Murphy sure managed to get very dirty.
I love the 'lineup' picture.
Yes all the dogs lined up is delightful. I love the pics of Jeannie but we are prejudiced. Is it true that the greatest percentage of Havanese are black and white?
Black and white is dominant so if you have black and white in the line you are apt to produce it here and there. If the line is full of black and white dogs you will get black and whites with an odd coloured dog if and only if they also have other colours in their lines. Even though Roxie has black and whites in her background and silvers, it is not a dominant with her or so it seems. Looking at Adele and Newton, there are reds, creams, sables, silver sables and chocolates. To get chocolates you must have them on both sides and be a carrier. It doesn't appear that Newton has chocolate in his line but Fiona pulled chocolate 8 generations back. It's going to be a surprise. With Roxie, there are a dominant amount of sables and brindles with some black and whites. It will be a surprise. With Leti there is even less black and whites in her line. The next 3 litters will be interesting.
i often went into a park with one white & black dawgy and one cream and left with 2 black tummies and 8 black paws! People would laugh, and I'd remind them that they're dark dawgies were just as dirty. Hahahaha.
Can't wait to hear about the counts tomorrow ... Exciting times.
Angela, I recall a conversation with Darlah about coat colours and combinations and she said, yes, black and white were most common. It will be very interesting to see what Roaxie and Adele produce in these two litters.
I should have known better and to be quiet and just let Darlah answer ...
What is a brindle? I found it interesting that even though Truffle was her father, none of the puppies in Murphy's litter had brown in them.
I am excited about knowing how many pups too! And, I am always excited when a litter is born because I know I get to watch them grow into lovely beings, and let's face it, they are all so totally cute. Of course, I am one of the lucky families waiting for a pup as many of you are so the excitement is even greater. But, I know it is very trying for Darlah with all the sleepless nights ahead and all the worrying that goes along with making sure they grow into healthy pups.
Sherry, there is a pic of each of the colours at

It means that Spice is not a chocolate carrier or didn't pull it in that time. Spice's line is dominant black and white and/or silver. It usually produces 1 sable or brindle. The key word is usually as it is in the line. If bred to a sable or brindle it would increase the odds. With chocolate it MUST be in both lines and they must also be a carrier.
A brindle dog usually is seen as a pattern of streaks on a lighter base coat but it can also be seen as specks. The brindles that are in her line are heavily coated streaks.
Adele also has a mask. She may or may not produce it. What that means is dark streaks in her face. Her face is not stained. She carries the mask gene but it is not dominant in her line. It will be interesting to see if any of her pups carry it. Abigail also had a mask but it faded. It doesn't seem to be dominant.
But you never know what genes you are going to pull. You only know the probabilities.
It's fascinating because not only are there all the variables for what the puppies will look like, it's remarkable how much their colouring can change as they grow.
Also, it's interesting to learn about the mask being part of Adele's colouring. Murphy being white gets a lot of staining from eating so I just assumed that's what other dogs have too.
Great photos. How did you get them lined up like that?? I have to say Havanese are the must beautiful and cuddly companions. You just want to snuggle with them whether clean or not. Rusty gets away with murder. I agree with you Angela. I can't wait to watch all the puppies grow and the wonderful reports we get from Darlah. I am envious of all the new puppy families. It is so exciting watching your puppy grow every day and to see how your puppy develops and interacts. I don't know another breeder that does that. Rusty and Holly are from Rixie's litter and they were both sables. Now Rusty has Roxie and Ella's colouring. As Nathan told me when we were choosing. The colour doesn't matter. It is the puppy. We have a wonderful puppy that we love to pieces. Looking forward to hearing the news tomorrow. Drive carefully.
Darlah, thanks for sharing the information about coat colours - I find it so fascinating to know what's in the lines and then see what they produce. Ronnie - it's amazing what happens with the sables, isn't it? I'm still amazed at the fact that Holly was a dark brown sable at birth and now she has totally lightened up to a beautiful beige with black tips. And then on days like today, she gets black paws to go with her black tips. ;-) She misses Saffron and Murphy, her muddy musketeers!
