Happy Chinese New Year!!: 3 Updates Tonight

Hi Darlah and Nathan,
Just want to let you know that Tenshi behaves fantastically throughout the flight to Montreal. She was a bit restless during the take off then she settles down in mid air. I wonder if she was feeling the pressure changes on take off. We came out of the plane and I let her out and gave her some treats and she ate it all ( usually when she's stressed she wouldn't take her favourite treats), so it tells me she's alright. We got home and she was eating her supper with no problem.

So today, we play dress-up for the Chinese New Year! Thank you Darlah for making her pretty and smelling good. My mom is totally in love with her. But then who wouldn't?

Great news to hear how well Tenchi travelled. Of course Tenchi would charm your mother. lol That is what Havanese do best.

Good to hear the flight went well. I would have thought an Havanese was far too big to be allowed in the cabin. Don’t pets have to fit in a carrier that goes under the seat? I always think it’s just cats or something like a Yorkie that can travel in the cabin.

Sue:

Tenshi fits into the sherpa bag. So she can go under the seat. She will always fit into her sherpa bags. Saffron's pups are in standard but smaller.

Murphy has flown to Ottawa to visit my sister several times in a Sherpa under my seat. Nobody even knew she was there.

Lovely picture Sylvia!

Kona still gits into his Sherpa bag and it fits under the seat in front. Kona weighs 11-12 lbs depending upon the season.

Beautiful photo Sylvia. Happy New Year to all!

I too am surprised they fit under the seat, especially if 11 - 12 lbs. What do you do when you go through security, carry the dog and put the Sherpa through the X-ray machine ?? (unlike that crazy lady on the news who followed her purse through the X-ray machine !!)

If you train them to a sherpa bag it makes the experience for them and you easier. It's one of the reasons why we get them used to a sherpa bag. It just makes too much sense.

Darlah- what size Sherpa bag for an adult Havanese? Medium or Large?
Height at shoulder is 10 inches. Length is about 13.5 inches.
Thank you

Thank you everyone for your kind words and wishes for this Year of the Dog.
This is our first time flying with Tenshi and it went better then I thought. Please don't mind my long message here because I do want to share my experience with everyone.

I asked my vet what her thoughts on flying with the pup. She said Tenshi should be fine without any meds. She said to try the first flight to see how she is first. She said to call her after the flight if there's any issue so she can advise on what meds I can give her 30 mins prior the flight to alleviate anxiety. But she was perfect alright.

We also boarded Tenshi with Darlah and Nathan the day before because only the talemakerhavanese family can provide that level of stimulations to tire her out before the flight. And Darlah does a super great job in grooming her.

To fly in cabin with air canada the dimension of the carrier is Height 23 cm x Width 40 cm x Length 55 cm for hard shell and height 27 cm x width 40 cm x length 55 cm for soft shell. (But some aircraft will require an even smaller carrier so you have to check carefully online)and it is considered as one carry-on item. The Sherpa bag is a soft shell dimension. We have a Sleepypod air which is also a soft shell carrier. We choose sleepypod because we do travelling by car and it's a carrier that has been tested crash proof in a collision. Tenshi is a small gal 8.5 pounds (which I love) so she has no issues being in the pod and able to turn 360 degrees.
She has been very conditioned to the carrier, we bring her out in that carrier almost everyday. Sometimes at home, she would ask to go in there when she wants her own space.

Once you buy the tickets for the human, call their reservation number and register your pet because sometimes there are a limit of pets that can travel on one particular flight.

Since this is our first time, we picked Toronto center island airport to fly because it is less hectic and more relaxed there. We were at the airport 2 hours prior to take off because we didn't know the procedure. They suggest 30 mins prior to usual check-in time. We cannot check in online nor at the electronic kiosk because of the pet. We have to go to the check in counter in person. We paid her fees which is 50$ per flight segment. Tenshi greeted the counter agents and other passenger then off we go to the bathroom with her. I lay down her peepee pad but she didn't want to pee. We also didn't feed her breakfast that morning in case she has motion sickness. Out flight is at 14:15. We were also walking around on leash in the airport before heading to security.

It's a short line in security when you fly from center island airport. We took Tenshi out of her pod. I carry her to walk through security gate and the pod goes through X-ray machine. She put her back in the pod and proceed to the waiting lounge. We had 45 mins to chill in the lounge before take off.

We get on board with her pod position under seat. She was alright with all the noises. She has to remain in her carrier throughout the whole trip. On take off, she was restless moving around inside so we just keep saying everything is fine. I also put my hand on the carrier so she can feel my touch. Inside the pod, we put her favorite stuff animal and an used T shirt that smells like us. It's only a 45 mins flight. On descend, she was much less restless but I still pad her through the carrier so she can feel our touch. Getting off the plane was no problem. We got out and I let her out of her pod to see if she's ok. She was just so hungry haha.
Let's hope that our return flight will be as smooth! This definitely will open up a lot of travel possibilities for all of us.

Thank you so much for all this information Sylvia. Now I know what to expect if we ever take ours on a flight!

Okay, I’m jealous. No way my long legged, 17+lb Havenese is going under any seat. I think I just forget sometimes how large he is For the breed. I think he is still in standard, just at the top end.

Thank you Sylvia,
My Havanese weighs 13.8 pounds so may be a bit big for cabin flight Sleepypod or Sherpa.
Happy New Year.

February 18, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterSu

Kat weighs 12.5 lbs and has rode in a sherpa. Although not sure he had any room but him but we were off to a show back when and refused to have him fly cargo.
