Posts Short: Just Home

Will update you with anything Dennis got in photos but Nathan's angioplasty could not go ahead as he has 5 significant blockages. He is already referred to another surgeon who does multiple bypass surgery. We were not expecting this.

On another note here is the gallery. It's short but we will play catchup tomorrow.

We were wondering how Nathan’s angioplasty went.....you both must be very disappointed. Hoping that a potential bypass surgery can happen soon. Sending hugs and positive thoughts 🤗

It is necessary. He has 5 significant blockages. We are very disappointed. He has a long list of can and can't do and they told him to put an ambulance on speed dial if required. They said not to scare him but best to be prepared. You should see the list of things he can't do. He sees yet another surgeon who specializes next week the day after our anniversary.

Hoping the wait time for surgery is not too long 🙏 if done in the winter, then he will be good for the summer season 🤞

As he already has an appointment with a new surgeon next week, I think it will be very soon. They didn't even let him get home before making an appointment. I may be sending pups home myself.

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry, Darlah. No time is a good time but this is a terrible time. I have friends though, one the husband of my dearest friend, who had a quadruple bypass. After surgery recovery, he felt like a new man. Thinking of all of you.❤️

We’re thinking of you all as you go through these uncertain times. It’s amazing what they can do with surgery to improve things. Stay strong and positive!

I hope it's scheduled soon, straightforward and that his post surgery recovery is uncomplicated.
Lots of prayers heading your way.🙏🏻

Hi Darlah, so disappointing and a worry. Hoping he gets his surgery quickly and home better than ever.

November 25, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterValerie and Stella.

Angela how long did he take him to recover? The book they gave us says 3 months. I did not expect that long.

November 25, 2020 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Think he has Dr. Cutrara as he is in Trillium. A few reviews were not good :-( Said bedside was well not great. I am not having Nathan read these.

November 25, 2020 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Certainly not the news you wanted but I know several people who have had such surgery and had wonderful results. Hope the surgery is soon and remember bedside manner is less important than skill ! ☺

Stay strong Nathan and Darlah!
You are in my prayers.

November 25, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterLiz and Abby

Maureen: I agree and that's why we are not looking for anyone else but I kept reading and well reviews on surgeons - not sure they should have them. Makes you worry more.

November 25, 2020 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Thanks all! Reading the booklet 3 months recovery - really? Our daughter had a ventricular septal defect repaired that was significant. You could hear the buzzing without touching her. Her recovery was quicker than 3 months. I guess she was young. Nathan has NO history of heart disease. My family - well even I have a murmur. Would think it would be me. Rather it be me than Nathan.

Thinking of you and Nathan. I hope his surgery is scheduled soon and his recovery is quick and uneventful ❤️❤️❤️

So sorry to hear about the complications that Nathan and you are facing, Darlah. We wish both of you strength and courage as you face this challenge. Thinking of you both at this difficult time. Our positive thoughts are with you,

Darlah, everyone's recovery is different but my friend, a former colleague, had a quintuple bypass when he was 40. His recovery was about 2.5 months. He was fit as a fiddle then, still now. The surgery will give Nathan a new lease on life. Thinking of all of you.

Praying for you & Nathan.

November 26, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterKaren & Pippin

It took him about 3 months, Darlah. I just confirmed with my friend.

Wishing you all the best, sending you positive thought, praying for you. Stay strong.

So sorry to hear this news. Our thoughts and prayers for all of you that Nathan’s surgery happens quickly and goes smoothly. Hugs to all of you ❤️🙏

Not the news that you and Nathan were hoping for. Will there be a change in surgeons since the surgery will be more complex ? Quite often, surgeons do not have great bedside manners or friendly personalities. Their skill is in their hands. Sending prayers for you and Nathan. I am sure that Dennis will step up and help you .

I'm so sorry you both have to go through this. Recovery time depends on a lot of things, of course, but those who recover best and quickest attend a cardiac rehab program afterwards. There is solid research to support the benefits of cardiac rehab. On a personal note: My uncle had a quintuple bypass in his 70s. He attended rehab like a fanatic, and he's doing well at age 96. There are lots of good websites about the surgery,. Hopefully Nathan will get good pre- and post-op teaching, so he knows what to expect.
I agree about surgeons and bedside manner. You need to feel assured about the surgeon's operative skills. But no one should put up with rude behaviour, either!

November 26, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterEllen

My mom had double bypass surgery years ago, the recovery time was about 3 months, incision has to heal ( muscles, dermis, etc) and sternum (bone)has to reform and remodel together. Primary importance was not to get site infected and limit lifting or stress/tension on sutures. Walking multiple times for short intervals was also emphasized.
I could go on, TMI, but I think you will have a nurse visit for the first few days to check on his progress and they should advise you if you have concerns, the rehab will come later once he has recovered sufficiently.

Praying for you guys, stay safe!

November 26, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

Darlah, so sorry to hear that Nathan requires surgery instead of angioplasty. I know from personal experience that the recovery from bypass will be three months at least. It’s very gradual and requires patience to build stamina. He will feel younger after recovery. Best wishes to you both, please don’t hesitate to call on me if I can assist in any way. I would be happy to help.

November 26, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterLaurie

Oh no, having to wait for the surgery will be stressful, I'm sure. Luckily, Nathan has a bunch of adorable puppies to snuggle while he waits patiently, I hope. John and I have loads of free time now, our gardening business season is done. We are happy to assist in any way that we can. Stay strong Nathan and Darlah! xo

November 26, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJodi Altman

Darlah,
I’m sure Nathan and yourself are all very worried about the results of the angiogram. Unfortunately, the standard of care for patients with 3 or more vessels disease requires coronary artery bypass surgery... I have worked as a nurse in the cardiovascular intensive care unit providing care for patients right post-op. So if you have any questions regarding your journey in the ICU, give me a shout. Also, let me know if there’s anything you need, we are glad to help. That includes making trips for you to the pet store if you need to get things ready for the pups, or getting groceries for you so Nathan doesn’t need to carry too much weights.

November 26, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterSylvia

Yes what Nathan needs quintuple. It means Dennis and I will carry everything that we do here. Going to be a long winter. Nathan has spent most of the day in bed today. I juggled all day.

Not sure how rehab works when he is out of Trillium 35 min away nor how nurses are visiting so far away. I guess we will find out.

Do you know some of my best friends are all nurses. I find that fascinating. I mean the MAJORITY are nurses and my daughter-in-law is a nurse practitioner in Vegas. She also worked in the cardiac unit. Glad to have the support.

I must admit I am toast today.

By the way the vet visit and Nathan's consult is the same day.

November 26, 2020 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Oh yeah baths, bags, paperwork - all on me. Oh boy...

November 26, 2020 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Ugh. Well that news must have been quite a blow. Keeping you all in our thoughts - while it is major surgery, it is better to plan and do it proactively rather than reacting to a cardiac crisis. Once Nathan is fully recovered and a new man, you can make up for it by heaping some extra work on him and you’ll get to swim in the pool with puppies! Clearly lots of support around you - don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

November 27, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterLisa & Ollie

I just looked at yesterdays post. I am so sorry to hear that Nathan needs more than an angioplasty. Don't be discouraged by reports that the doctor has bad bedside manner. Some of the best surgeons in the world aren't very friendly as someone else said here. In my personal experience with one of the world's renowned orthopaedic surgeons he was a miserable sot but amazing in the surgery.
Better to have the surgery now so he'll be good to go for pool season.
If you need to cancel the groom and board for next week let me know.
Nathan's job now has to be the puppy cuddlier in chief so that puts a lot more on you and Dennis so you need to look after yourself too.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.....Susan, Zoey and Abby
