Nine Days

Can you believe they are 9 days old already? They really are trying to get up on their legs to push off. They are rather strong. They are still getting weighed 3 times a day but I think tomorrow we will drop down to twice a day.

Yesterday in the early evening Leti had hardly any milk as she was feeding them non stop. The pups will not gain unless they sleep. So, I thought maybe I will close the gate door so she could see the pups but not feed them. Well, she went absolutely nuts. She was trying to figure out how to scale the pen. She was whining. It was obvious she was not going to settle down till she could be in with them.

Pups were unsettled as they were gassy. Leti knew they were unsettled.

Whatever Leti eats, they eat through her. She had some broccoli which is a huge no no for moms feeding pups but not everyone realizes that here until now (no not Nathan - he knows). Leti also was very gassy. Well 1 pup refused to eat. The other 2 wanted to feed nonstop. This is how pups react to tummy aches. They either eat too much or not eat at all. Leti knew something was wrong. So, for her staying away from the babies was out. I gave the pup that refused to eat some fluid. I gave all 3 a dab of gripe water and today no more gas.

I don't even give my non moms broccoli as it creates gas.

Now the lesson of this story is place a do not feed list on your fridge. All of you can do that. It is good to know what will create an unsettled tummy and what is a complete no no. You 'can' feed broccoli but it creates gas and therefore creates an upset tummy. Some dogs eventually get used to it. Some do not. It doesn't matter if they are puppies or adults.

All is well. Pups are doing well.

See the roller coaster rides you go through with pups? Everyone learns. I know they are fine as Leti is now sleeping off and on all day and so are the pups. You can also see them sleeping on the gallery and videos taken today.

The only other blip we had today was I washed Leti as she was looking ragged and she was beside herself so I got her underside dry and the top of her was damp and placed her under the heat lamp in the puppy pen. She is now dry but you can hardly tell that I washed her.

Very interesting to read about the broccoli effect. Those are wonderful videos. Leti is such a caring and loving mom. I can just imagine when you gave her a bath how quickly she wanted to get back to her pups.

Broccoli gives everyone gas, it is a cruciferous vegetable. Lol, poor little souls. They get more and more beautiful as they age, don't they?

The pups are beautiful. Leti is a great Mom. I think it is a great idea to put a list of foods that are not good for dogs on the fridge. Thanks for the tip.
