Third Tie August 1, 2015 - Tie was 4:05PM to 4:16PM 11 minutes
Have video but don't think you want to see that. I just found it fun watching them dance. I heard Adele was in a funk till she saw Newton this morning. Sorry I am missing this. Oh well. life. Seem to miss a lot.
Here's one video no connection. Just shows how the gal controls the dance. The gal says - catch me if you can.

That's because you are always holding down the fort, Darlah. Nathan seems to have most of the fun :-( Although, you are enjoying all the other dogs who are wonderful. And, you didn't have to make that terrible drive yesterday. I guess it's a big trade-off and a whole lot of work for both of you.
Yes but I wouldn't mind going myself at times. :-)
Love it when gals are in charge ( human and canine LOL!!) . Good for you Adele! Love this video, fascinating to watch.
Thanks for sharing the video.
Looks like they are getting the hang of it as each consecutive tie is shorter. Either that or Adel is tired and just telling him to hurry it up! LOL
Wow, that video is amazing and fascinating. I assume that happens with all the gals. Talk about playing hard to get ;-)
Not all are so enthusiastic their first time. Just like humans many are - some not. heh She appears to really like him. If she didn't, it would not have been so easy. There have been times when they go I really prefer HIM not THAT one!
Last tie in the morning then Nathan brings Adele and Envy home. He thinks he will be home by 3. Good as I know he will be tired but I need to chill for 15 minutes.
I love the comment, "There have been times when they go I really prefer HIM not THAT one!". Yup, just like humans alright!!!!!
How does it work with dogs? Are eggs released over a period of time or are you just trying to hit that one blast of eggs? I know, not the appropriate terminology, but I'm sure you get the jest of it.
The first stage of the reproductive cycle is proestrus, in which eggs in the ovaries begin to mature and estrogen levels begin to rise. During this stage males are attracted to non-receptive females.
Estrus is the next stage, in which estrogen levels are high, mature eggs are released from ovaries, and the females mentally and physically become receptive to copulation. It is only during estrus that copulation will result in pregnancy.
We did progesterone tests to find out when we were in Estrus.
Now to complicate things:
Gestation in a dog is 63 days in length, if measured from the day of ovulation. Canine sperm can live for 10 to 11 days in the uterine tubes (fallopian tubes) so if a female is bred 10 days before the oocytes (eggs) can be fertilized, she will appear to have a gestation length of 70 days. If she is bred on the day the oocytes can be fertilized, her gestation length will appear to be 60 days long.
An egg lives five days. But on day one the egg is immature and cannot be penetrated. On day three the egg will be ripe, and this is the best day to inseminate. On day four, eggs are still ripe, and on day five the eggs are dying. If you breed on day 5 after the eggs drop you may still get a pregnancy but a small litter.
It can take a couple days for the sperm to reach the eggs. When it does fertilization takes place. All the eggs get fertilized the same time, regardless of the time of each tie. You do multiple breedings to get sufficient sperm and timing correct. In reality Adele may have been fine with a breeding on Friday and no more if his sperm count is high but by doing multiple breedings you assure sperm count is sufficient.
So we count 63 days as early as Wednesday (29th) and count 63 days from as late from Sunday. As her progesterone was what it was it most likely will be 63 days from Wednesday till Friday.
Are you confused? It is ALWAYS 63 days from ovulation. How long they stay in that ovulation window can vary.
So pups September 30th to October 2nd is most likely when we will see pups.
We will not be doing progesterone on Roxie so we will not know a small window. We will guess and it is usually the longest tie give or take a day or 2. There are exceptions.
Thanks for explaining all that. It is so interesting! Such a science on the one hand but not really in other ways.
Thanks, Darlah. Very interesting that there is an exact number of days from a certain point, e.g. Ovulation. Also interesting how long the eggs and sperm are both viable.
All very interesting! Can you explain why the ties are different lengths and why the longest tie is significant?
Holly, it is usually an indicator that she is in her prime if the tie is long but there are always exceptions. Just when you think you have a system they say ah ha not with me! Usually for me it has worked out give or take a couple of days each way without progesterone. With progesterone you know when ovulation is happening but you still can't be so precise that you can say they will be born on 'this' day. What you have is a smaller window and a degree of certainty that you didn't miss the window. With a natural breeding and no progesterone you just breed daily till they do not want to breed any longer. The gal controls that much to the irritation of the sulking male when she says no. Of course there are other things we look for when not doing progesterone. They 'usually' are ovulating when their discharge turns a straw colour vs red blood and the placement of her private area also changes so she can be receptive to the male. I will tell you Roxie is still red and Jeannie is almost done. I suspect not till Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for her. That could put their pups a week apart. Or it could be less. Time will tell. Leti is not showing any signs of coming in but looking at my calendar, she is not due till August/September.
So interesting! Thank you for the reply! I'm excited about both sets of puppies! Will be following along daily! :-)
