3 Plus Days Old
This was the smallest who weighed in at 4.75 and is now 6 ounces. Just looked at Rowan's and Emmy's weights at day 3 and it is very similar. Here I thought the weight gain was slow but steady and it seems theirs was the same.
We had a bit of a blip. Her lower milk station was impacted so the vet said antibiotics till they loosen up. From past experience, I say that is day 3 or 4. She has only had 2. So now her tummy is a tad upset as antibiotics do that so only Nathan can get her to eat. heh This is very minor. But it is obvious that one station bothers her. By tonight it will be looser and each day even more so.
What can I say about the pups. They are strong. They find mom more times than not. It's not by feel that they find her nipples. Many are quite small still but will change as the week goes on. The more they feed, the more they become pronounced. I hear them sniffing to find her. It's a riot.
They are totally ruining her hair. I guess soon I will have to get her shorter. We shall see. They crawl through her hair, over her back and all around her neck. But she so adores them.
Well, her milk station is loosening up. She is eating for Nathan. hahahaha She wants steak not hamburger. Her pups have all gained well today.

wow! exciting times at talemaker! how old is saffron? pretty funny somehow.
She's only a year and a half. It's not an age I would breed. We wait till 2 plus years and its a case by case thing. We see how mature they are. Some at 2 are not mature and some are.
It's very hard having extra people here - grandkids, daughter etc. All it takes is not paying attention to whom you are letting out together. I find the entire experience unsettling to be honest. It wasn't planned ever to breed her. We were placing her as she was too small. She is like your Nora or Pepper. There is a first time for everything, I guess. It's not something I ever plan to repeat.
But the good news is she has solid poos so her system is working exceptionally well. She had milk right away. Her pups were of size. Other than a hardening of one milk station she is wonderful and that is clearing up fast. Her pups appear full of vigor. She is attentive though when human mom is outdoors she wants to make sure I am okay or she wonders why I am not with her. She has no problem going outdoors when her pups are sleeping and they do sleep between feedings. Some pups eat non stop at first with very few breaks as they are waiting for the milk to fully come in. Hers eat, get full and sleep solid then start the process again. So, she is able to go outside, do her duty and not be too stressed.
I tend to really make sure my gals get balance. I remember with my own kids how that was something that was tough to obtain so I vowed my moms would have massages, grooming, loving up and wash cloths to soothe the tummy. They LOVE how special they are made to feel and they deserve that for all the work that they do.
But 2 plus years old, please.
I feel for you, Darlah, that kind of surprise is not one you would want to repeat. I understand. But since it was meant to be, it is wonderful pups and Moms are all doing so well. Hugs.
Radar says "wow, I'm an Uncle". ;-)
Yeah Radar is an uncle. That's nice!!
there could be a market for small havanese. nora gets all the attention when we are out walking for being soo cute. it will be interesting to see if saffron produces smaller dogs or not. i can understand how it would be upsetting for you but much less life long consequences with a younger dog than a teenaged girl :)
Alene:
So true. Many want the small ones. Nora, Pepper and Mia are adorable. In about 2 weeks we will see if they will be small or some will be and some not. She does have small and large in the line and Stone is not small. Time will tell. I may have to feed them at 3 plus weeks to not tax mom but we shall see.
I have a friend that was a teen when she had her first and she is now a great grandmother at my age. It's boggling. There is something to say for early and enjoying the later years, I guess. Silver linings we need to concentrate on.
It isn't until we are "oldER" that we can appreciate what is better or best. Life has a schedule for us and we move along. Beautiful Saffron appears to be such a wonderful mother. I truly love this little one. She is so mellow.
AND you are absolutely the best MOTHER FOR ALL. When I walk in the park I let everyone know with pride about our wonderful breeders. And Rusty is really a very good example of what good breeding and caring is all about. So enough of my soppiness but it is true!
I agree wholeheartedly with you Ronnie.
