Afternoon Delight

Good thing Roxie is not in heat. Benji loves playing with her so and if she was she wouldn't be able to be with the boys. I am hoping Treasure and Spice don't come in till the end of August or September. That would suit me fine.

Benji sleeps up to me all night cuddling up. When we are in the midst of heat Nathan gets the gals, I get the boys. I am lucky that I have the Benji just like I was lucky to have the Cooper as Nathan hogs the visitors. hahahahaha

That's okay, Mia and Tiger Lily come tomorrow so Nathan gets to spoil them and when Tiger Lily leaves Coco and Doozie arrive. It's great timing as everything will be a routine with the pups and we can get some swimming in too. I may even take the pups outside in a whelping box with Fiona. We shall see. That will be a first but as long as the weather is good, it is doable.

We had a storm this morning that didn't last long enough. We didn't get a swim in nor any grooming except for Benji and Fiona. It was break day for me and tomorrow we will be back at it. It's important to have a break.

We did have some wild play and some games and some snuggles. Logan arrived for the day, ate up a storm and his human brother is getting him tonight.

Life is great with Havanese snuggles!

I really like Benji's haircut .. wonder what you would call that cut?

I'd call it a puppy cut, Ange. I prefer my girls to stay w/ the puppy look so will keep Laci just a tad longer than she is . . . then again, I've been saying that as each month goes by, so I may still be saying that at Christmas! Still can't bring myself to have Laci cut, but I think her hair grows slowly as it's still looking so great . . . to me!

Hair can be so traumatic! I have a real bad back and couldn't get downtown to my stylist so tried someone here - oy! I could have done a much better job which made me think I may start w/ trimming Laci's top knot . . . some time down the road. I think these dogs need what I refer to as "slicing into the hair" so there isn't a straight edge. I do my own upkeep like that. But Darlah would know better than me. I must watch her video on grooming again - I need a refresh! I can pick my groomer's brain as well.

I do think Benji's Mom did a pretty good job for a 1st try though, don't you?

I call it the shag cut. He has the most wonderful hair - so soft and easy to brush out.

The issue with Havanese is if you cut different lengths you are more apt to get mats. I did it with Shoshi one year thinning out her cut slicing into it and layering it. It looked great the first month and then the knots came as the different lengths grew. Slicing in is popular with Bichons as the texture and thickness and their cut hides so much. If you know how to do it you can slice through mats and never notice it but do it too much and you create uneven hair and the mats come then.

So of you do a shag cut you must keep it short or love grooming and not care that you have to take out mats or pray you are not in that once in a lifetime thing called blowing a coat which isn't really blowing a coat but rather their undercoat coming in. The thicker the coat the more difficult the job.

So far Benji hasn't had a single knot. I do think she did a great 1st time cut. I can't remember the last time Risa was cut but I adore the long coat but that's not for everyone.

I did have a lady at Pawsway come up to us and say wow I wanted to see what a Havanese really looks like as everyone around me cuts theirs short. She loved the long look but each person likes something different.

Logan who I classified as having the coat from hell actually is at a length that it finally became easier to maintain. He is brushed and combed out daily but each Monday when he came from moms I used to deal with mats - no more. Each time I took him in from the rain I was dealing with knots. His hair finally got to a length all one length that its no longer a huge chore. It's like bangs. Sometimes you have to let it get past a certain stage or they will never grow out.

Each hair is different. I have had people that have a thin coat want the thick coat and visa versa. By far the thinner, silky coat is easier to maintain hands down.

Darlah, you do such a wonderful job on your dogs and so many that I am more than impressed. I understand what you mean about mats and slicing into the hair. With long hair and then short quite close together, it would make for tangling and matting = knots. I only do the slicing on the front bang or fringe of hair. I don't think I'll attempt the body, so why I was impressed w/ Benji's Mom. I'll just stick to bangs for Laci and me! LOL I've ventured outward w/ myself and it hasn't been a success, but then again, not as bad as this last cut I got from a local stylist - which was all straight cut! yikes!!! I was tempted to ask him and teach and thought - maybe not! :-)

I must remember the shag / puppy cut ... the long coat is stunning but I don't think I would be able to keep that up ... Darlah you are wonder woman is all I can say!! ... Thank you Debi & Darlah for your input .. alway helpful
