Warmer?

Dennis kept telling me it was warmer. I can't seem to stand out there as the cold air tends to make me cough in an uncontrollable fashion. But they were running and having fun today.

Nathan brushed Cali today. I brushed everyone else. I noticed her beard is getting longer.

Kona tends to truly like the falling snow. He comes in mostly white. Dennis too. :-)

Gracie is here flying up a storm. Gracie is like family - not bred here but comes to chase her energy out. :-) I call her Crazy Gracie - not crazy in a bad way - crazy fun way.

Roxie managed to get into the running play too.

Pepper always tries this maneuver to get the best of Scruffy where she runs under him. I have never seen anyone do that before except the wee pups so its fascinating watching how she can still manage to do it. Cali can still fit through the gates so Spice's pups are mighty agile with their bodies.

When you can't win you try to overpower? hahahaha

I call this the running of the dogs. They love to chase each other.

Kona found the rabbits and now each time he goes out he's looking for them with such intent. He is indeed fascinated by them.

They ran so much today that I am positive they are going to sleep the dead sleep.

DJ is having a total blast. He gets bathed tomorrow and off he goes home.

Yes, DJ and Adele are siblings.

Received a story about Logan and wanted to share it with you. I meant to do so yesterday but I am not totally healthy.

Here it is:
We have a long Indian cord with brass bells that Logan has learned to nudge when he wants to go out.  Panda is happy for him to be the bell ringer.  Last night for some reason, Logan was going in and out like a crazy dog and Gallan had had enough with the bell ringing.  So...Gallan wrapped the bells out of reach around the door handle.  About ten minutes went by and all of sudden, there was the Logster on his hind legs ringing that damn bell like Notre Dame.  We laughed so much and Gallan says "He is a genius dog and deserves to go out."  There was Miss P right behind, so proud of Cousin Logi.  What a guy!

----

Hope that made you smile like it did me. Now you see the only issue with those bells. :-)

Great shot of all the dogs running. Cali looks very cute in the top photo too!

Who is Spice's biggest pup and how big is s/he? Trigger's getting so big - he could be bigger than Levon!

What an absolutely gorgeous picture of Cali !!! I love the bearded look.
Your dogs wouldn't have been running around outside like that if they had been in Muskoka to-day. My dogs were in and out so fast in this bitter cold they barely had time to go potty.

We are sitting at -20 feels like -24c so it was cold but we only do short bursts many times a day. It was too cold for the pups and we did have fresh snow we woke up to this morning. How cold was it in Muskoka? This has been the worse winter for ice and cold. I talk to a dear friend that I have been friends with for a very long time. She lives outside Salt Lake City in the mountains. They are having a warm relatively dry season. Usually we have that and she is having snow and more snow. Can't wait till we have a DRY spring - oh please a dry spring!

Shannon: Spice's biggest pup is Brewer and hes the same size as Levon. :-) By the way, Cali was the 2nd smallest in this litter and Tofu (well I called her that) is larger than her but not by much. None are over sized.

January 25, 2014 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Trigger might just become the biggest one yet! He has such an appetite - no fat, still more delicate than Levon, but little difference size-wise and he's just past the 6 month mark. I can't believe Tofu is bigger than Cali! Good for her. I am always surprised how tiny Cali looks when I see her (in comparison to Trig), She has such a big personality, you don't notice size in photos when so much spark comes across the page.

Spice pups stop growing earlier - just so you know. Yeah Cali is now just starting to fill out. Think she will be like Pepper and Spice. Is Trigger still eating his 3rd meal?

Great photos. Nice to see the dogs having fun despite the cold. Cute picture of Cali. I'm not sure if I would have recognized her, her face seems a bit darker or maybe it's the bearded look. Funny story about the bells. Our dogs sure are smart. In Muskoka, it's been cold but yesterday was a balmy -13. Woke up this morning to -29. Long winter for everyone. Summer, please come soon.

Trigger doesn't get his third meal. The only time they eat lunch is at your place because I don't like to feed them in the morning before we get in the car since both have been carsick before. But they are both always on the hunt for anything that might be food. My last dog wasn't like that - is the putting anything in your mouth a puppy/young dog thing or does it just depend on the individual dog?

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

Try knotting old towels, wetting and freezing. Havanese are dogs that like to use their mouths. Some like humans like to eat more than others. For instance Roxie, Fiona and Jeanie are my dogs that can miss a meal where Risa, Adele, Cali will act as if they are starving always. You don't treat unless you are training and their bodies will adapt like ours but sometimes - like in my case - its all in my head and I just see it and want it. Dogs can be that way too. It doesn't mean they have to have it.

Trigger will start filling out vs getting taller. I am starting to see that with Cali.

I just like them big, small and inbetween. You do too and you fretted about Levon till I suppose he stopped growing. It will happen with the Trigger too.

What is magical is the opposite face/butts in colour and how they have bonded. I watched Bailey with Bella yesterday and went - its happening again. Too often some breeders don't pay attention to adding a new dog to the equation and if you don't you can have a mismatch. Just like people they need to compliment each other not clash and have entirely different energy levels - same with the family. Trigger and Levon indeed compliment each other. The list goes on with the matches. I watched Scruffy and Pepper entirely different body types - she is more feminine, delicate - he's a real boy. Do you know they even lay side by side just like each other? It's funny how times goes on they truly mesh as if they are each a part of a whole. Nothing like 2 havanese. The love they share is quite special!

Anne: It's the bearded look and its brushed flat. I can take a photo of her today not brushed yet and you will go - oh there's Cali. She rarely stays neat like Spice. She is entering the filling out stage. Muntuno already went through that stage - longer hair and wider. Muntuno takes after Phantom, Cali takes after Spice.

Thanks, I'll try freezing the towels. Trigger is definitely starting to fill out - he's not nearly as delicate as he once was, but still considerable lighter than Levon (who is a powerhouse).

I love the way they have bonded too. It took a little bit, but Levon couldn't resist the puppy charm. :) I actually sometimes think Trigger may be more bonded to Levon than to us, but it may be more of just an "in the moment" preference because when I shower he waits in the bathroom for me, peaking through the shower curtain. lol.

Darlah I still feed Mabel 1/4 cup three times a day ... she is still thin. I thought I would have a clear sign to let me know when to change ... weight gain? Does Cali still eat three meals?

We were dumped on with snow and wind Friday and Saturday. Everything around us is closed. What a winter! I can't wait for nicer weather ... Mable and I are getting cabin fever already and it is just January :(

I love seeing the pictures of all the dogs running :)
Happy to hear you are feeling better. Take care of yourself too ... the dogs will thank you for it :)

Laci loves to chew and her #1 thing (and only actually) is the Bullwrinkles. The only change over time was getting her larger ones so she can't chew the entire thing at one sitting. She has never taken to chewing one single thing in the house and I credit these chewies and introducing them early on. I have a friend that has a dog that never got chew-type treats and he's in to everything and anything he can find. It's also bordom. They need this outlet especially when singletons.

Like Roxie, Laci will skip a meal or two every 2 or 3 weeks. I've just gotten used to it, but hen I do worry, I may make her a scrambled egg which she loves. :-)

Glad to see Scruffy & Pepper having fun. We miss them!
They really do take care of each other. Sometimes when Scruffy is fussing about his bathing or grooming, I say "stop that or you will scare Pepper" and he stops. It's just about the only thing that works. Pepper is still afraid of the blow dryer and bath. It is better than before but I thought it would have passed by now. I think Scruffy senses her fear, so he knows I'm not kidding when I say that.

Jayne: We just started stopping both Cali and Leti's mid day meal. If she is still too thin why not reduce her to 2 meals and do a 1/3 of a cup each meal vs. 1/4cup. Watch and see if she is still eating that well. If she starts gaining wait at 2/3 of a cup a day you can reduce her to 2/4. They really can be at 2 meals a day. Risa eats 1/4 cup twice a day as do all our adults.

Lori:

When she gets her bath next weekend I will let you know how she is. They have been having a terrific amount of fun so much so that I won't groom them today till just before you come. If Scruffy snuggles with me Pepper says ME TOO!

January 26, 2014 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Shannon: It is funny but they can play with each other in a different way than we can with them so that is a bit intoxicating for a pup but its not the other dog vs you. Its just different. Its sort of like having 2 kids. You can play with them all you want but I suspect 2 close siblings play different when mom is around and different when they perceive mom is not. It is why webcams are so popular. The things you learn. :-)

Deb:

You are right - boredom is #1 reason for all sorts of behavior troubles.

January 26, 2014 | Registered CommenterDarlah

Thx Darlah ... We will start that tomorrow. Will keep an eye on her weight. Weighed her on the bathroom scale today and she is 10lbs.
I just had her at my daughters store for a bit today ... did some meet and greet to get out of the house. She enjoyed it and the customers were all very nice and stopped to say hi.
Mabel always looks like I never brush her ... she is so cute and shaggy looking right now :)
Love the top picture of Cali ... such a wonderful expression on her face :)
Thx again ... Take care

Jayne: Lori and I were just talking about that. It seems its a Spice trait - the natural messy look. I rather like it! Hope you do too. Nice to get out after all this weather. We have had steady but slow snow here.

January 26, 2014 | Registered CommenterDarlah

I love the messy look ... goes very well with her fun personality! :)

We just seem to get dumped on ... get ourselves unburied and then
it comes again. We used have winters like this all the time ... Got a little spoiled.
I was in Gravenhurst a few weeks ago and I know there are some of your puppy people up that way and they are really getting a lot of snow and cold. :(
I hope everyone is staying warm and you are looking after yourself.
Take care
