Sunning But Cool

Coolish day but they still enjoyed sunning. At least it didn't come with rain.

Here is the gallery.

The dogs helped me with emptying pots so I could plant the strawberries. The Cilantro is planted. I did have to get more soil. I cut back a few things and the dogs went yum - sticks. LOL

Nathan has decided for his birthday we will get out of dodge and get some things he needs and maybe a nice lunch. We shall see. I wanted to get him an automatic pool skimmer but he says - I am the skimmer. LOL Okay, if you want to be.

Tomorrow we have Willow and Ollie visiting. That will be fun!

Bria arrived. We are waiting for Cara and Fitz to arrive and Teddy and Ty departs.

Scruffy and Pepper decided the chair that Teddy covets is now theirs. LOL

We played hide the treat today. Everyone got a couple of treats.

Love the photo of the chocolate pup ? Meadow? She has lips!
Great shot.

Yes, Meadow is a charmer in a huge way. She listens too. You call her, she comes. You call Misty, she says - I can't hear you unless you have something she wants.

Rusty still only comes for a treat. We went to the Vet. Over $600 and now they are considering giving the dogs heartworm pill all year. Yuk. Rusty was trembling but so good the Vet said he was no problem when they gave him needles and she asked if he ever barks. Funny but his heart was racing. Would the mobile vet do teeth cleaning?

$500 is what it cost us for 3 dogs and that included bloodwork and shots. We await to hear what the blood comes back for on Shoshi. I will ask about teeth cleaning.

Ronnie, what was involved with the $600 and how many dogs?
We have the 2 and are new to vet billing, bloodwork, etc.
We both have human medicine backgrounds and are curious.

Ronnie - why heartworm meds all year ?? Have there been a lot of cases in your area ?? My vet is still only doing the 6 month but I know there has been very little incidence in Muskoka - surprisingly since this can be bug city !

$600 seems like a lot for one dog for a physical and bloodwork I assume? We had a full panel done on Cooper recently and it cost $155.00. Consultation was $68.00, lasted well over 30 minutes, not rushed in the least.

Anne:

There are no set fees in Toronto. Not sure what it is like in Quebec. Therefore it is at the whim of the vet as to how much they charge. It can be frustrating. Country vets are cheaper than city vets as country vets get volume. City vets see a sliver of animals that their country counterparts see. A full blood panel varies but you can also have vets simply doing a blood chemistry and not a full panel. Therefore costs needs to be compared equally. Your full panel was very reasonable. Of course the full panel costs more and tells you more. But do you need that each year? It's useful for a baseline but not needed yearly unless you are seeing issues but at your costs, why not. I find vet fees in Ontario frustrating as they can range from very high to reasonable. Sounds like you have a very reasonable vet. Treasure them. :-) I would pay more for the vet I had at the house as she had 25,000 active clients and over 25 years experience. Her knowledge is worth everything to me. A city vet may not be familiar with something and look it up in the Merck Manual and where the chances are Michelle, our vet and her husband will have seen it and knows how to treat it. That's not to say city vets are not good. It only means that you only know what you experience. So when she said she is starting this travelling business, I celebrated. You should celebrate with yours. Like I said - treasure them! LOL

I am SO glad you have a reasonable vet that you trust and like. It's worth everything.

You don't need heartworm all year. I practice less toxins not more. I do what I have to depending on where I live. We do not do flea and tick meds.

Dr Stiles is an excellent vet, we trust her implicitly. She’s on the executive board of CVMA, highly respected by her peers. We do heart worm testing every few years but we do tick and flees meds, have to where we live. Not taking chances. The full panel was our choice, always good to have a baseline.

I should have added, for the benefit of others, that we did a full panel on Cooper because he hadn’t been feeling well, no diarrhea but no appetite. Always a concern when you have a dog that normally eats all the time. All is good now but we chose the blood work to eliminate all possibilities related to blood testing.

I’ve read recently about food grade diatomaceous earth and it’s uses for internal and external parasites treatment, have you heard of this?
I think they put it in horses hay feed.

Can't understand how this would kill parasites, check out the CDC for further information regarding 3 types of parasites. I don't think it has use if your dog has heartworm, with horses I would worry about sand colic. No use if you have malaria, leismania, etc. My work included parasitology.
Gardeners use it to kill slugs, abrasive to their tissues, maybe that's where the idea originated.

It helps with pests such as fleas, ants etc. Heartworm - have not heard of any havanese with the issue. Flea and tick meds such as Nexgard is effective in 24 hours. If you are going to cottage country then give it once and they are good for a month. You do not need to put poisons in them 12 months of the year and longterm use comes with their own issues despite if they do not have a reaction. Our vet suggested I read this as Meadow had an issue with getting rabies too early - the vets mistake. Read this. There are many other articles and our vet suggested I read.Just google his name to see his credentials and more info on this subject.
