Not 1 Day Old Till Afternoon

Click on Photo for Larger ViewThe pups have all gained. Here is a short video of them this morning. Plus here is a gallery. The pups feel plump. They are eating. Mom has milk.

Jeannie needs to sleep more but she is in new mom mode. She is eating very well. She has loose bowels which is normal. Only Saffron stayed firm throughout. It just means bum clean up each time. It's life.

Nesting and Water Sac

Creative nesting... Had to shut a crate and put a door on it as she wanted to have her pups in there.

Panting...

This is her water sac. She should have pups soon. Soon can be as much as 2 hours or sooner. It can go fast after the water breaks or slow. Each is unique.

Nesting: Yet Another Update

Here's a video. I make the towels all nice and neat and she messes them up. Why do I have towels in there? As she delivers you take up the top layer so you always have as clean as you can conditions. It is not alwats possible if pups come quickly but we so try.

2nd stage:

Your female may go to her whelping box, or couch, or wherever she has chosen to have her pups, and start digging. This is what Jeannie is doing.

She may start shivering and panting, examining her rear, and licking her vulva. (She is panting)

She may have mild contractions, vomiting, pooping and urinating more. (I believe she is having mild contractions now as she thinks she has to go. I am no longer taking her outside as she wants to head under the deck. Instead I am having her use a pad.

We are progressing.

Process: Video of Jeannie Added

First stage of labor:

(This stage often goes unnoticed, and takes place in the 24 hours following temperature drop.)

Temperature FINALLY drops to 98°F from its normal 99, 100, 101°F (you should have been taking it regularly for a few days).

If you are really committed, the temperature taking does work.  You will find her temperature around 99 to 101, and as soon as it starts to drop below 99 and continues to drop (now you take it every hour or two) you have about 12-24 hours from the start of the drop. When it bottoms out to 98 or 97.9, then you have about 2-12 hours.

With that thinking we should have pups by 10am but we won't. Jeannie is still in 1st stage and her temps have gone back up. This is normal. There are always exceptions to the 2 to 12 hour rule. Jeannie is an exception.

She is nesting at times. She is panting at times but her vulva is not swollen. Swollen tells me pups are in place. She is NOT in distress. She just kept me up all night and of course Nathan said he was up all night and didn't take a sleeping pill as she was close. Somehow I should have known. I think as always Nathan got more sleep than me. Guys need more. heh

When do I think she will go? My luck at 10 tonight. I will let you know when she is in stage 2. She may have started as she is getting rid of her bowels. For dogs when they feel pressure they don't know if its due to needing to go or they are having contractions. It's good that they go through this stage as they empty themselves out so when they are in active labour they do not have a mess.

Jeannie also refuse food and anyone who knows Jeannie knows she LOVES food.

Jeannie's Whelping Area

For now she is enjoying the crate more.

When we have pups as usual we will be posting photos as they come or at least text to let you know and I fill in the photos after.
